What do you think?

I read this on one of the blogs I subsribe to and wanted to get your opinion on it (I'll post mine later, as not to taint or influence your perspective):

"The University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute is working with the U.S. Joint Forces Command to harness supercomputer power, to simulate a virtual continent for use in urban battlefield situations. The simulation, set in the year 2015, involves 100,000 entities to simulate, although the system can support more than a million."

Before I could make a valid comment on the posting, I went to the actual article that the blog was talking about...It is amazing how far technology and computers have come. When the computer was first invented, it was a large almost useless machine. Now the size has decreased tremendously and from this article, the uses of a computer seem endless.
As for the matter of using a computer to simulate a war, I feel it is a great way to prepare our troops. To others it might seem wrong to have our troops participate in it, but if you don't prepare, the opposition can have the upper hand, which wouldn't be good in times of war.

The first thing that came to mind after reading this blog is how the terrorists involved in 9-11 had used a flight simulation to learn how to fly those planes. I'm not sure why that is the first thing I thought of. I don't know enough about the program to conclude that it would have such negative effects on society.

Also, while it is amazing how far technology has come, it isn't quite as amazing to me, only because I feel like I've been around technology my entire life. Of course, I haven't taken the opportunity to necessarily make it a part of my own personal life, but the offer has been available. Growing up in the Silicon Valley I think had advantages. My schools were always introducing new computer labs and programs. I've just never had the desire to learn all about it... until IP&T 287!!
