Today in 276 we discussed the definitions of teaching and learning. I thought I might add a few more comments on the subject based on what I learned during our faculty training seminar.
Dr. Russ Osguthorpe was the first presenter; he nicely summarized the goal of teaching: "helping students establish learning that grows and lasts." The second presenter, John Tanner, suggested that this might be accomplished by being a "guide on the side, rather than a sage on the stage." He noted that this is a challenge for many teachers, simply because they are used to lecturing, and find it easier to spew information, rather than using inquiry based methods to inspire students to thirst, search, and build knowledge for themselves. At the end of his speech he invited the faculty to create "atmospheres of participation" in their classrooms in an effort to ensure that students are actively learning. Finally he suggested that we look at our students as stars, and work towards being a refining host, helping the students become "shining stars." I found this to be a wonderful invitation - now, let's see if I can measure up.
