A computer nerd? Geek?

Recently my wife has decided to label me a computer nerd? I figured this was simple jest, until a few other friends gave me the title computer geek. I was taken back by these comments; I didn't know what to think. Back in high school I hated my computer class, in fact it was my worst class. Sure, while I am working on my Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology and Technology I spend a lot of time on my computer, and have even found time to buy into the idea of RSS feeds and Wiki technology, but I don't consider myself a computer nerd or geek. I think my wife (who is a graphic designer) and my friends feel that because I am somewhat current on a myriad of contemporary technology tools I am deserving of the title. However, I still am a little perplexed by this title. In the past I assumed computer nerds and geeks were programmers and hackers who were somewhat social inverts and limited their hobbies to computers, gaming, and other solitary past-times. Traditionally, I felt, the terms even carried a negative connotation. However, recently I feel because of our dependence on technology it seems we have all become a little more tech savvy, therefore we are all guilty, and have become more computer geek and nerd oriented. To be honest I don't think we should be ashamed of it (my wife is going to kill me for even writing something on this topic - she'll say my simple effort in addressing this validates her point.) I guess I find it interesting to reflect on sometimes-strange pop culture issues (and yes, defining computer geeks and nerds is now a contemporary issue). Just to make things clear - my definition of computer nerds and geeks has now changed, because no longer can an individual know it all (re: technology) - most programmers who label themselves as computer nerds/ geeks really know a lot, but typically only have one area of expertise. Therefore according to this definition if you are somewhat savvy in one particular field of technology (yes, wifey you included, being a Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, email, chat guru) can now officially call yourselves computer nerds/ geeks! I welcome any comments - only because the comments will help me shake?... hmm.. validate? my title!
